[Authentic] task of problem identification and solution

Assessment 2 is a group-based Assessment. You are required to form groups of 4-5 students and select a group leader. Think of your group as a task force (a temporary work unit) given the task of problem identification and solution. Creativity, innovation and design thinking becomes useful as they are tools by which new and useful solutions can be arrived at to solve on-going problems. Many of the world’s corporate and non-corporate problems are complex and evolving and require new ways of thinking, new methods and new products/services to solve. They also require collaborations between individuals with complementary ss. Thus in this Assessment students are asked to take on the role of collaborators who identity problems and come up with new and useful solutions to solve them. When forming your groups, please think about finding group members from diverse backgrounds, with different s-sets and showing gender balance as these factors can foster creative thinking and problem solving in groups.
Once your group is formed, discuss among your group members and identify a real world organizational problem (e.g., high incidence of work stress, issues related to managing a diverse workforce etc.) OR a non-organization-related problem (e.g., disposal of plastic waste, the harmful effects of social media etc.) that is current and pressing and has negative consequences for the organisation, its employees or the community at large. Then identify the consequences of this organizational/non-organizational problem. You MUST do research to identify a problem and its consequences by reading journal articles, books, referring to news, TED Talks and magazine articles etc. However, you must use and cite a minimum of three scholarly work.
Once you’ve identified a problem, come up with creative (i.e., new and useful) and practical solutions on how to solve this problem. You may brainstorm possible creative ideas at first. Then go through each idea to choose the one’s that are the most practical and implementable. Your solutions can take the form of introducing a new and useful product/service, a project and/or a method or a combination of these. You MUST come up with a minimum of 2 solutions.
Finally, prepare a short video (5-6 minutes in length) that ‘pitches’ your solutions to potential clients. Potential clients in this instance mean parties who have the ability to agree to your ideas/solutions and fund them so that they can be implemented. (e.g, Board of Directors, private investors)
The video should essentially include the following:
the problem you have identified through research (cite these research in your video)
what consequences are being experienced due to this problem (cite the research you did on this in your video)
what you propose as creative (new and useful) and practical solutions (at least two) to this problem
how you believe these will help to solve the identified problem
a list of all scholarly work (a minimum of three) and/or non-scholarly work used to identify the problem and its consequences
Requirements of the video
The video must be short – no more than 5 – 6 minutes
The video must identify and provide creative and practical solutions (at least two) to an existing problem in the world.
The video must be designed in a way that your ideas/solutions are ‘pitched’ to potential ‘clients’.
Groups may choose to film their videos as a documentary, role-play, news report or any other creative manner that meets the above requirements and clearly communicates the message across
Please ensure that you keep to the following guidelines when making your film:
The video must only include group members
The group members must agree to being filmed
Videos can be recorded outdoors but limit the inclusion of passersby as much as possible as their consent is not taken
The videos should avoid sensitive/inappropriate topics (e.g. topics that incite hatred or glorify unlawful behaviour etc)
The videos should not be shown beyond the classroom/CANVAS
